Hopkins packs a punch

AVALON ABC Senior Welterweight Billy Hopkins notched up his first win of the season at the Huyton suite in Liverpool on December 6.

The 20-year-old, who was up against experienced Warrington boxer David Ayres, 31, took the fight to his opponent from the first bell.

A contest of skill and wits followed, with neither boxer giving too much away but it was the Avalon man who was landing the cleaner shots in the first round.

The Warrington fighter started to come into the contest in the early stages of the second round, but Hopkins dug in and began to turn the round to his favour as the round progressed.

In the third, Hopkins stepped it up a gear and began to let the combinations flow.

He followed his shots up and did not allow the Warrington fighter to settle into any kind of rhythm.

At the bell, the judges awarded the decision to the delighted Wallasey boxer - his 22nd fight for the Seacombe club, who he has represented for six years.
