Oxton go nuts against the Squirrels

OXTON where looking for a positive result ahead of their Northern Premier league campaign when they hosted National League side Formby in a friendly last Sunday.

Mark Donnelly weaved his waythrough the Formby de-fence on the right, but no Oxton players were onhand to apply the finish.

Formby were they first to score after a stray Oxton pass was intercepted and areverse stickshot was rifled into the net.

They soon scored asecond from a short corner after a drag flick gave keeper Dolan no chance.

Oxton pulled a goal back through captain Richard Sutton, finishing from close range.

They started to press and an equaliser came from Chris Williams after good work from the midfield.

Oxton were now the team on top, but were pegged back before half time by a Formby breakawaythat gave the away side a 3-2 half time advantage.

Thesecond half sawOxton maintain control of the game, running the midfield and creating several chances.

It was not long beforeone of these chances were taken and Chris Wiliams was on target for his second.

Formby had a number of chances to equalise, hitting the post twice and forcing Oxton keeper Phil Edwards into a number of good saves.

This only inspired Oxton and Mark Donnelly scored from two well worked short corners to give the home side a 5-3 lead.

Paul Lythgoe rounded offthe scoring to give Oxton a 6-3 win.

The fifth team were in friendlyaction and recorded a 5-2 win over Chester at Town-field Lane last Saturday.

Barry Hopton scored three times while Andy Salisbury and Harry Lester were the other scorers.
