Caldy start as they mean to carry on

CALDY enjoyed a successful start to the 2006/7 season with their final warm-up game at Paton Field against Midlands side Walsall.

Meanwhile, the second and third teams - the Lions and the Warriros - started their league programmes.

The Lions travelled to Lymm where they achieved a 12-19 victory while the Warriors went to Broughton Park with ablend of youth and experience. They came away with a7-27 win with tries from Ian Chesham (2), Ewan Lamont (2) and Alan Barnish while Max Doyle added a conversion.

Caldy's first team competed against aWalsall side that has strengthened in the closed season.

Walsall took the lead within 90 seconds when the busy scrum half made a good break to set up a try in the right corner.

Caldy replied eight minutes later with afine solo break from John Close, who cut inside from the right wing, across field and down the left to score under the posts. Mason added for 7-5. Despite lots of chances, Caldy conspired to keep only a narrow advantage until just beforethe interval when Sean Woof score a lovely try for 14-5.

After the re-start, Walsall could only manage a penalty while Caldy ran in tries from Loa Tupoa and two from full-backBen Wylie with one more kick from Mason to leave the final score at 31-8.

Meanwhile, the Senior Colts continued the good start with a 13-13 draw against last season's league champions, Sale.

The under-17s Colts were narrowly beaten by the Cheshire Champions Sand-bach 14-5.

Next weekend, the first team travel to Hartsfield where they take on New Brighton. The Blues will be looking to makeapositive start tothe North One account.
