Woods shows off her medal

A DISABLED athlete who finished second in a wheelchair race in Sweden has been showing off her silver medal to schoolchildren in Wirral.

Shelly Woods, who competed in the Wheelchair 800m for Women demonstration race in Gothenburg, proudly displayed her medal to young athletes at Cheshire Oaks High School, Ellesmere Port.

The West Cheshire Athletics Club member plans to compete in a number of events over the next few months.

Her coach, Jason Gill, said: "Shelly has stepped up a level now and is able to start using tactics instead of just pushing to try and hang on.

"She's got a number of races over the next few months, including the IPC World Championships in Assen, Holland, at the beginning of September.

"She will compete in the 800m, 1,500m, 5,000m and the marathon before taking part in the Great North Run on October 1, where she'll be defending the title she won last year with a new course record."
