OXTON hockey club men’s first team faced Sheffield University Bankers who are in the lower half of table, although it was a tighter affair than anticipated.
In the first half, the side were neck and neck, with Oxton showing more chance of breaking through than Sheffield but no one could break the deadlock.
It was a different scenario in the second half, with the home side pushing hard for a goal, but their last touch was letting them down.
Oxton finally broke through with a brilliant deflection from Ali Parkes, the assist coming from Jonathan Hodgkinson.
From the restart, Sheffield where frantically trying to get a goal back and turned the match into an end to end battle. However, Oxton stayed focused and put a second goal in to seal the game, another great deflection, but this time from Ali Mackenzie.
The last few minutes of the game saw Bankers press hard to break through, but the whistle sounded and Oxton had earned another three points to keep them top of the table. They take on Formby HC away next Saturday who are struggling for points at the bottom of the league.
