Wiral record resounding victory over Sale

IN a thoroughly absorbing match, Wirral gained revenge for their last minute home defeat earlier in the season against Sale, the pre season promotion favourites, with a rearguard defence in the final 40 minutes.

In the first half, Wirral built up a 22-0 lead through tries by Joe Murray (2) and Craig Harvey with two conversions and a penalty.

The lead was achieved by Wirral taking the game to their opponents and being able to control their possession and capitalize on Sale’s errors.

The second half saw a more determined effort from Sale and Wirral held them at bay until the 50th minute, when Jonathan Keep scored and this was followed by another on 60 minutes by scrum half Connolly who took advantage of Wirral being down to 14 men. Wirral on going to 13 men yielded a further try through Keep and the conversion left Sale within three points of Wirral.

With Wirral back to full strength the final 12 mins plus stoppage was filled with tension as Sale sought a winning try but the Wirral defence contained them to go on and record an historic victory.
