Caldy 27-22 Hull

CALDY managed to hold on in the dying stages of the game to secure their first win in six games against an unbeaten Hull Ionians side who had quality all over the pitch.

Gavin Roberts grabbed the limelight with a sensational hat-trick as the wizard weaved his magic.

Caldy were under pressure for large periods in the first half but managed to take a 14-0 lead with Roberts touching down under the posts after an excellent backs move saw Roberts cut inside his man. The second try was superb as the outside centre found space out wide on the half way line and then swerved around four players before stretching over the line.

Hull Ionians hit straight back with two tries of their own as Daniel Hague benefitted from a loose ball at a scrum and then hooker Forth powered his way over from close range to level the scores. On the stroke of half time, Rich Vasey kicked a penalty to give Caldy a slender lead.

Caldy started the second half well as Roberts completed his hat-trick after Caldy had managed to work an overlap on the left hand.

Backrower Wood won the foot race after a chip through from winger Heylings to reduce the scores to 24-19 with Ionians on top. Vasey kicked a tough penalty to stretch the lead to eight before a last minute kick from Reakes saw Ionians get a well deserved bonus point.
