BIRKENHEAD PARK faced a daunting trip to Harrogate to take on the unbeaten National 3 North leaders Harrogate at Claro Road on Saturday.
Park were on the wrong end of 58-8 score line but were still able to come away with a positive feeling.
Park found themselves ahead after 20 minutes 8-7 after a try by winger Robbie Houliston and a penalty by Dave Hall but unfortunately that proved to be the end of the scoring for the away side.
Park travelled without the injured Dave Ibbotson and minus new player coach Shaun Woof but the Birkenhead forwards gave a very good account of themselves despite losing flanker Adam Cupples early on.
Prop Matt Ibbotson was outstanding and Jack Ashcroft looked to be back to his best form as well but long periods of pressure went unrewarded with the Harrogate defence holding firm.
Once again Park were punished for some silly mistakes and poor defence which allowed Harrogate to build a sizeable lead.
Team Manager George Pollock said: “The margin of defeat was extremely harsh and certainly not a true reflection of the game.
“We competed well for much of the game and the Harrogate forwards certainly knew they had been in a contest.”
Park have a welcome break in league action this Saturday but will need to prepare well for the next important home game against Bradford & Bingley on November 14.
