YANI TSENG will be heading to Wirral later this year seeking an unprecedented golfing hat-trick.
The world’s No 1 woman player will be bidding to complete her third successive victory in the Ricoh Women’s British Open, which takes place at Royal Liverpool from September 13-16.
Tseng started her run of titles at Royal Birkdale in 2010, triumphing again last summer at Carnoustie.
She will be joined at Hoylake by Sun Young Yoo, winner of the opening women’s major of the season. The South Korean came out on top in the 2012 Kraft Nabisco Championship after beating IK Kim in a play-off for the biggest success of her career.
But Tseng will arrive on Merseyside as red-hot favourite after already winning five majors at the age of just 23.
Tseng believes her victory in Southport gave her a platform for future success.
“Winning the Ricoh Women’s British Open for two consecutive years has been huge for me and has really helped improve the mental aspect of my game, giving me the confidence to play as world number one,” she says.
“I have had a great start to the season and while I am disappointed to have just missed out on the season’s first major, it makes me doubly determined to defend at Royal Liverpool.”
Shona Malcolm, the Ladies Golf Union’s chief executive believes Merseyside golf fans are in for a treat.
“We are looking forward to playing at Royal Liverpool for the first time this year and all our preparations are going well,” she said. “The ladies’ game is very exciting and the standard is exceptionally high with Yani still on fire. This will be a world class field battling it out over one of the world’s best courses and I believe we are in for a fantastic week.”
