CALDY had to produce one of their grittiest performances of the season to overcome a resolute Leicester Lions side in an action packed game with both sides giving their all in defence and attack.
In the end, the game was decided by a Dom Kohler drop goal and an Andrew Soutar penalty with six minutes to go.
Leicester Lions failed to take advantage of the first half conditions having both the wind and hill in their favour.
Caldy’s defence held firm under considerable pressure with Woof and Roberts in particular making big tackles at the right time.
A Stokes penalty cancelled out an early effort by Soutar to leave the scores 3-3 before Caldy snatched the first try of the day. Shaun Woof found space in midfield to break the defensive line and powered over for a well deserved try.
Leicester came out with a point to prove at the start of the second half and a Stokes penalty followed by a Gareth Collins converted try saw Leicester edge ahead 13-10.
Andrew Soutar scored the try of the day, sneaking under the posts on 54 minutes after more good work by Woof.
Leicester hit back with a try from prop Tom William’s after a rolling maul to edge back ahead.
Dom Kohler kicked the vital drop goal on 59 minutes after good work from the Caldy forwards and Soutar topped off a good performance by kicking a penalty from under the posts to seal the victory.
