Vauxhall Motors suffer another setback in bid to escape lower reaches of the Blue Square Bet North Division

VAUXHALL MOTORS’ quest to escape from the lower reaches of the Blue Square Bet North Division stalled again on Saturday when they let a lead slip and lost out to high-flying Nuneaton Town.

It turned out to be a feisty contest at times and Motors had Tom Hannigan red-carded late on to compound their forgettable afternoon.

It had all started so well for Carl Macauley’s men at the Liberty Way Stadium.

The visitors enjoyed the better of the early exchanges and a super 18-yard strike from Leighton McGivern on 25 minutes was just reward for their efforts.

The goal filled the Motormen with confidence and with an hour played they still held the upper hand.

However, their fortunes were to change for the worse when Nuneaton introduced substitute Danny Glover.

Just five minutes after his introduction, Glover won the first penalty of the afternoon when he used his strength to go past three defenders before being brought down from behind in the penalty area.

Glover himself stepped up and struck the resulting penalty to the right of Scott Tynan for the equaliser.

Heading into the final stages and with the outcome of the game still uncertain, Motors paid the penalty for a second time.

Town player Wesley York was released in the area and was felled by Hannigan.

The Vauxhall man was red-carded as he was the last defender and Glover coolly dispatched the spot-kick to win the points for his team.

Motors stay 19th in the table but are only one point off the drop zone.

VAUXHALL will be aiming to return to winning ways this Saturday afternoon when they visit bottom club Eastwood Town.

The match at Coronation Park kicks-off at 3pm.
