YOUR CHAMPIONS: Friends of Birkenhead Kennels nominated for their dedication to helping dogs at council-run kennels

THE Friends of Birkenhead Kennels have notched up another success – with a nomination for our Your Champions awards.

Wirral News has teamed up with Scottish Power to highlight the good work of individuals or groups who have benefited the community.

We received e-mails and letters from supporters of the Friends of Birkenhead Kennels urging us to consider the volunteers for an award.

Many pointed to the Friends’ determination and dedication to their cause, with one saying: “They are so kind and caring and they have never given up or lost sight of their goal.”

The group, which fundraises to help improve conditions for Wirral’s abandoned dogs at Birkenhead Kennels, became a registered charity two weeks ago.

The Corporation Road kennels is the only local authority controlled facility of its kind remaining on Merseyside.

The Friends now boast more than 5,000 supporters on Facebook and have raised £16,000.

They hold regular fundraising events and the next will be a Greek night on Friday, November 4 at Hoylake Social Club.

Tickets are £5 from Antje on 07799 194657.

The deadline for Your Champions nominations this year has now closed.

Our heroes and heroines will be honoured at a presentation ceremony at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Chester on Friday, November 18, where they will also be in the running for a regional champion of champions award.

THIS week the Friends of Birkenhead Kennels are appealing for a new owner for a Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross without a name.

The three-year-old sable-coloured male is approximately three years old and loves to play. He can appear quite shy in his kennel but loves cuddles.

If you can give him a new home call Birkenhead Kennels on 647 8799.
