A CHALLENGE is being offered to Wirral’s young people – to take part in an exciting new initiative that could change their lives.
Wirral Met, together with Wirral News, has picked up the gauntlet to take youngsters on a voyage of discovery.
Not just to discover what opportunities are out there for them... but also to help nurture and develop the future workforce of Wirral.
In the next few weeks Wirral Works will reveal more exciting developments, geared to developing not just people, but businesses in Wirral too.
What better way to launch Wirral Works.
We asked people for their thoughts.
KEN DAVIES, Chief executive officer, Wirral Chamber of Commerce and Industry
WIRRAL Chamber of Commerce and Industry is delighted to support the initiative Wirral Works.
We recognise that Wirral is facing difficult times in the coming year, but Wirral businesses are resilient and are capable of leading the economic recovery in the borough.
The medium to long term prospects for Wirral are promising, with the Peel Wirral Waterfront Development approved, the supermarket development in Birkenhead now in construction, the Golf Open Championship returning to Hoylake in 2014. These and many more opportunities will see the recovery and improvement of Wirral’s fortunes.
Wirral Chamber is currently delivering the Enterprise Allowance Scheme, a government initiative to encourage unemployed people with a business idea set up their own companies. As part of the scheme the Chamber has asked Business owners and managers to volunteer as Mentors, to help the prospective entrepreneurs to develop their business ideas in to successful ventures. The response from the Wirral community both in volunteering to mentor and in taking the opportunity to start a business has been excellent.
As a further encouragement to people to start a business we are soon to launch the Wirral Enterprise Club. This club will be open to both unemployed and employed people who wish to investigate the possibility of self employment as an option. The club will be non profit making and will provide advice and support and networking opportunities in a relaxed and informal setting.
Almost 100 years old, Wirral Chamber of Commerce knows that Wirral Business Works and is now working towards the future expansion and development of its commercial and community infrastructure. We have launched a new website to assist businesses in Wirral, to keep in touch and be part of the changing face of business in the borough visit us www.wirralchamber.org.uk
COUN JEFF GREEN Council Leader
WIRRAL Met is a really important part of our plans to grow our economy. Many employers I meet tell me they need people to have the right skills to help fill some of the 955 unfilled job centre vacancies we currently have in Wirral. We’ll also do more – that’s why we are doubling the size of the Wirral Apprentice Programme.
ALISON McGOVERN MP for Wirral South
LIFE is tough in Britain at the moment.
Wirral is suffering some of the biggest cuts by the Government in a generation.
The level of youth unemployment is a cause for great concern. That is why I am delighted that Wirral News and Wirral Met have come together to address the biggest challenge we face – the skills of our young people, the future of Wirral.
