Moreton man Dave takes steps to boost charity

A MAN with a heart of gold was inspired to run the extra mile for his late mother and raise £4,000 in her memory.

Dave Jackson, 46, of Moreton, started running in 2000 after his mum, Mary, was diagnosed with cancer of the spine.

He now has 16 medals for running marathons, half marathons and 10k races – all of which have been sponsored events providing funds for many charities.

The expectant grandfather and father of two said: “My mum battled cancer for 11 years before she died last year aged 66.

“She became wheelchair-bound in the end but this didn’t affect her motivation.

“My mother always concentrated on the positive, which is what inspires me. I will run now until I can’t run any more.”

Dave’s good work has been recognised by almost everyone around him including his work colleagues at Tesco in Bidston Moss.

At their last Christmas party they presented Dave with a Heart of Gold award.

He said: “If I can make somebody’s day then that’s great.

“Things like raising enough money to buy an extra hospital bed or taking a biscuit tin filled with money to the baby unit in Arrowe Park Hospital just makes me feel good.”

Dave’s latest feat was last week’s London marathon, which he completed in five hours 25 minutes.

Dave said: “I am really thankful for all the support I receive from my family, friends and work colleagues because their encouragement means a lot to me.”

His wife, Sue, 49, said: “We are all really proud of him.”
