Marilyn Okoro and Laura Muir produced impressive performances to progress from the 800 metres heats, but there was to be no dream senior debut for Jessica Judd.
The top three from each heat automatically progressed at the Luzhniki Stadium, as did the next four fastest qualifiers.
Okoro shone in the first heat, producing a season-best performance of one minute 59.43 seconds to go through in second.
Muir also impressed and a late surge down the back straight saw her automatically qualify with a personal best time of 2mins 00.80secs.
The pair will line-up for the semi-finals on Friday, but Judd's first major championship is over.
On the day her A-level results come out, the 18-year-old crossed the line fifth in her heat after a 2min 4.08s run on her senior Great Britain debut.
"It just didn't go how I wanted it to at all," Muir said.
"The first lap was fine, the first 600 was fine and then I thought now I really need to turn it on in the home straight and there was just nothing there.
"I'm so disappointed, but I gave it my all. I left nothing on the track, it's just my all wasn't good enough today."
