England wicketkeeper Matt Prior was ruled out of the Champions Trophy contest against South Africa at Centurion through illness.
Prior, 27, succumbed to a viral infection, so Eoin Morgan took his place behind the stumps.
Essex batsman Ravi Bopara was recalled to take Prior's place in the XI.
Prior did not emerge for pre-match practice at Centurion, with Morgan donning the pads and gloves.
England do not have a second gloveman in the 15-man party but former Ireland international Morgan has kept wicket previously in his career, twice for Middlesex seconds and also in a match for his home nation against Scotland.
England captain Andrew Strauss won the toss and opted to bat first against the host nation.
The Proteas made one change with Herschelle Gibbs recalled after a rib injury in place of Hashim Amla at the top of the order.
Victory for England would seal a semi-finals berth with one match in Group B still to play.
