David Cameron insisted he remained determined to crack down on problem drinking as he was warned dropping plans for minimum alcohol pricing would "critically undermine" that aim. The Prime Minister said the Government was still examining the results of a consultation on the policy amid mounting speculation the move he personally championed will be abandoned.
A man accused of killing his six children in a house fire has collapsed and sobbed in the witness box as a court heard a 999 call made by him and his wife as the blaze took hold. Sitting in the court as he gave evidence, Mick Philpott, 56, doubled over and wept loudly as Nottingham Crown Court heard the desperate call made to emergency services as the children were trapped inside the house.
An SAS sniper today won an appeal against convictions for illegally possessing a pistol and ammunition. Danny Nightingale, 38, of Crewe, Cheshire, was sentenced to 18 months military detention by a judge sitting in a military court in November 2012 after admitting illegally possessing a Glock 9mm pistol and more than 300 rounds of ammunition.

DJ Dave Lee Travis has been re-arrested over further allegations of sexual offences. Supermarket giant Tesco has bought restaurant chain Giraffe for £48.6 million under plans to transform its stores into family-friendly retail destinations. The group plans to open Giraffe restaurants alongside larger stores, with the first due near London before the end of the year, as part of aims for customers to "meet, eat and drink, as well as shop" when they visit its supermarkets.
The grave of a medieval knight and the foundations of a monastery built by a former king of Scotland have been found under an old city car park. Archaeologists made the discoveries, with dozens of other artefacts, during the excavation of a building site in Edinburgh's Old Town.
Passengers on cross-Channel journeys endured the worst of the travel disruption today caused by the continuing mid-March cold snap. Channel Tunnel high-speed train company Eurostar had to cancel 10 services and there were delays of up to two hours on trains that were able to run.
