An Irish nanny in the United States illegally could be charged with murder after the one-year-old child she was looking after suffered fatal injuries in her care, prosecutors have said.
Aisling McCarthy Brady is being held on 500,000 dollars (£315,000) bail after pleading not guilty to assault and battery on a child causing injury.
Prosecutors said the charges against the woman could be upgraded after a post-mortem on Rehma Sabir, of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Rehma was taken to hospital on January 14 - her first birthday - with head injuries. She died two days later.
Authorities said Brady was the only person with the child when the injuries occurred.
Brady's lawyer said the injuries could have happened at any time.
Immigration authorities said Brady arrived from Ireland in 2002 and was only permitted to stay for 90 days.
