Name: Chris EvansChallenge: Tandem SkydiveFundraising for: North West Air Ambulance
ON APRIL 26 I shall be taking part in a 14,000ft tandem skydive to raise funds for the North West Air Ambulance (www.nwaa.net).
So, why am I jumping out of a plane at 14,000ft strapped to another human and a piece of silk?
I am a paramedic working in Wirral. I had finished the last of my three-day shifts on New Year’s Day and was relaxing at home with a well deserved drink, when I saw a tweet on the North West Air Ambulance Twitter feed (@NWAirAmbulance) advertising the opportunity to join them for a charity tandem skydive.
I thought, in a moment of madness, “yes I like the idea of that”, so I contacted them and registered. After all, you have to do something mad in a year, don’t you?
The countdown then began – as did the fundraising.
This great charity now has three air ambulances, one of which is currently on trial, working throughout the whole of the North West. If the trial is successful, one will soon be based in the Wirral and Liverpool area.
The accessibility to this fantastic service can make such a difference to people who need to get specialist treatment in the most critical of times, where a land ambulance would take longer by road to the designated hospital. This is particularly urgent in the more rural areas of the North West region.
As the organisation is a charity, they need all the help they can get. When I’m in work, I just never know when I will be treating a patient or patients who may need their services – but knowing that they are there if needed is always great.
I have chosen a target of £500, but I am looking to completely obliterate that total as it costs in excess of £4.2m to keep two of the aircraft in service. Now there are three, you can imagine the rising costs.
As well as putting up sponsor forms on the ambulance stations I work out of, I have also set up a Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/Stato12648, where people can go online and donate as little or as much as they wish.
In addition to this, people can also donate by way of text message by sending NWAA71 £5 to 70070. This amount isn’t fixed, and can be changed to £1, £2, £10 or whatever they wish. Whatever the amount is, it will just be added to their mobile phone bills.
