I WOULD like to start my article this week by wishing everyone a very happy New Year and adding my heartfelt congratulations to the residents of Wirral who were awarded honours in the New Years Honours list.
Gareth Williams, principal at West Kirby Residential School was awarded an OBE for his services to special needs education.
Michael Joseph Kennedy received an MBE for services to children and families.
Professor William Lee was also awarded an MBE for his services to the restoration of Birkenhead Park and the community in Birkenhead.
British Empire Medals (BEM) were awarded to Beryl Dare for her services to the community after 31 years of volunteering with Arrowe Park Hospital League of Friends.
Fiona Dillon received the BEM for her voluntary services to Wirral through her work with West Wirral Lions Club, and John Loughnane received his BEM for services to Wirral’s nature conservation through his work with the New Ferry Butterfly Park.
Finally Margaret Parry, who is an executive officer of Jobcentre Plus, was honoured with a British Empire Medal for her services to Department for Work and Pensions and to the community in Merseyside through Wallasey and District Disabled Persons Swimming and Social Club.
These awards are all so very well deserved and demonstrate clearly just how many people out there in our neighbourhoods and communities are unsung heroes doing so much behind the scenes to help in their local communities and the wider area.
