A FREE uniform scheme in Wirral has been given a cash boost to reach out and help more families.
The recycling scheme called Wirral Fuss (Free Uniforms for Schools) was set up two years ago by Sheila Fowler to help kit out children for free and lessen the cost to families.
Now the group have been awarded £1,850 from Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority’s community fund.
Money will be used to develop the scheme further across Merseyside.
Wirral Fuss have also set up two new collection points at Tranmere Methodist Church and Lower Bebington Methodist Church, so as to make it easier for parents to take advantage of the scheme.
This is in addition to St Luke’s Church in Hoylake, where it was first set up.
The three centres are holding an collection day for parents to pick up clothes for their children out ahead of the new term.
This is on Saturday, January 4, between from 10.30am and 1.30pm.
Sheila, a grandmother from Hoylake, said: “New school uniforms can cost up to £300 and many families just don’t have the money.
“We can help with out grown or lost items.
“Wirral Fuss is about helping those families and giving a new life to perfectly good uniforms which may otherwise have ended up in landfill.
“The two new collection hubs in Tranmere and Bebington will mean families don’t have to travel as far to collect uniforms, which makes economic and ecological sense.”
Tranmere Methodist Church will have school uniforms for University Academy, St Mary’s Catholic College, Mosslands and Prenton Girls School.
Lower Bebington Methodist Church will have garments for Bebington High School, Wirral Grammar Girls School, St John Plessington and Neston High School.
St Luke’s in Hoylake continues to hold uniforms for West Kirby Grammar, Hilbre, Calday and Woodchurch, St Anselm's and Upton Hall.
Carl Beer, director of Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority, added: “Wirral Fuss is a great scheme which will help low income families and have a direct impact on the amount of textiles sent to landfill.”
