A MERRY Christmas Day lunch will be held in Wirral so people who live on their own won’t be lonely.
St Bridget's Church in West Kirby is spreading goodwill across the borough by inviting people to come and join them in a festive feast, and share the day together.
The joyous occasion is directed at those who would normally have no-one to spend Christmas with.
Age UK estimate that nearly half a million pensioners will face spending Christmas Day on their own this year.
It is free to join the festivities at the Caldy Road church with drinks on arrival at 12.30pm, then a traditional three-course dinner served at 1pm, and expected finish around 4pm.
The Christmas event was made possible thanks to parishioners donating food and money, as well as volunteering their time to cook the dinner on the day.
Places are limited to around 90 people due to restricted space.
This is the second year the Christmas Day lunch will be held on a bigger scale.
Rev Mike Loach, who has been curate at the church for 18 months, said: “Loneliness is a significant issue for many in the UK with an estimated 450,000 pensioners who will face Christmas on their own.
“There are many on Wirral who wish for some extra company at this time of year. This is why we hold the Christmas Day lunch. Last year, every part of the dinner was cooked by a different person and it was delicious.
“All the food has been donated by parishioners and local butchers. It has been a real community effort.
“Our volunteers have been busy preparing for the occasion and will be cooking different parts of the dinner at home.
“There will be the traditional turkey with potatoes, carrots and sprouts, followed by mince pies, trifle and Christmas cake. We also have a vegetarian option too.
“There is no charge for the meal, and we have volunteers to help with transport to pick people up.
“We have pensioners who live on their own, couples with no other family living locally, and families who have settled away from their extended family, who will all come together to enjoy each other's company.
“Anyone is welcome to join us, although places are restricted to around 90 people. There are around 35 places left and they need to be booked. So to those who would like some extra company on Christmas day, we’d love you to join us.”
