WIRRAL’S roller derby team have skated to a successful finish for the year.
Wirral Whipiteres Roller Derby team are celebrating after being accepted as UK Roller Derby Association (UKRDA) members.
The group began in 2011 and now has over 80 members in the two league teams – Savage Lillies in the women’s league and Pack Animals in the men’s.
The UKRDA accreditation recognises the hard work from the voluntary sports team. This also allows them to take part in the largest roller derby tournament in Europe, the Heartland Series 2014.
The year-long competition will see the Savage Lillies roll against teams from across the UK.
Marla Slinger, from the Whipiteres league, said: “Being members of the UKRDA opens new doors for the league.”
For a chance to see the team, the Whipiteres have organised a Christmas roll-off with a Dr Seuss Grinch theme this Saturday (Dec 7), at Leasowe Recreation Centre.
At 1.30pm, The Pack Animals will take on Hades Roller Boys from Scotland, followed by Savage Lillies versus The Furies from Manchester at 3.50pm.
There will be a Dr Seuss fancy dress competition for spectators, raffle and lots of cakes. Tickets cost £6 for adults, and £3 for children under 16. Fives and under are free.
