A MARATHON walk was completed by a Wirral woman raising cash for a children’s charity after her grandson was born with heart complications.
Lily Clough walked 50km, or 31 miles, on a treadmill at an Upton gym to raise funds for the Children's Heart Association (CHA).
The 58-year-old is supporting the charity as her grandson, Noah Collins, was born with holes in his heart.
Lily, who also lives in Upton, said: ““The Children's Heart Association gives tremendous support to families with ‘heart children’, and equipment to specialist children's heart centres such as Alder Hey Hospital.
“Noah was a very frail baby and born with holes in his heart. He was very poorly and was in intensive care – it was touch and go and we nearly lost him. He underwent open-heart surgery at five-months-old in Alder Hey.
“Now he is a lively, thriving three-year-old – although he still requires daily medication and regular checks both at Alder Hey and Arrowe Park hospitals.
“He is happy to tell people ‘My heart used to be broken but now it has been fixed’.
“I did the charity walk on a treadmill at Evolution Training Centre. It was hard going but worth it and I was tired by the end of it.
“A huge thanks to the staff and members for all their support. Thanks also to Come Rain or Shine shop on Arrowe Park Road for supplying balloons and support.
“I am profoundly grateful for all donations and sponsorship in these difficult financial times and with so many other good causes asking for support.”
Friday’s fundraiser raised £100 with more to be donated. Now Lily is looking forward to the next stage of trekking to the summit of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania next month.
In the past, she has completed three previous challenges for Wirral’s Claire House Children's Hospice.
Lily, who is now retired from working with the Wirral Youth Offending Service, added: “I will be trekking 5,895 metres high to the summit of Kilimanjaro. The trip is entirely self-funded, so every penny raised will go to the charity.”
