A WIRRAL café gave rivals a roasting after being crowned brewers of Britain’s best coffee.
Avanti in Heswall beat 200 competitors to win the Beverage Standards Association's (BSA) top national award – four cup accreditation – for the quality of coffee and hot chocolate.
The café, on Telegraph Road, won the coveted title through two mystery shoppers who put their hot drinks service under scrutiny.
Owners Mike and Janette Davison are delighted with the win, which was announced at the BSA’s gala awards in London with guest speaker Dame Kelly Holmes presenting the prize.
The couple have been running Avanti for three years and employ 10 staff.
Mike Davison said: “We were presented with the BSA's four cup accreditation which was won for our ‘exceptional outlet for drinks and service’. It is one of the BSA's top national awards for the quality of our coffee and hot chocolate.
“We were nominated by one of our suppliers. We had no idea when the mystery shoppers were going to visit.
“They came to assess us on two occasions, where all aspects of our hot drinks service were put under severe scrutiny.
“These awards are referred to as the Michelin stars of the hot drinks industry.
“Over 200 independent coffee shops throughout Great Britain entered the competition.
“We have put the title’s certificate and sticker on display in the window.
“We are absolutely delighted and it was a good team effort to win.”
