New Brighton cinema to host first Liverpool Pride event

A CINEMA will host Liverpool Pride’s first official event in Wirral.

The Light cinema, in New Brighton, will be the venue for the launch of Out & About, a film screening and education programme with website, on March 21.

The programme is aimed at lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and their friends across Merseyside and Halton, bringing film screenings and education workshops to community venues.

The film programme will highlight the best in LGBT cinema including feature films, documentaries and classic movies and is funded by Creative England’s Film Culture Fund, with support from Unison North West.

It is hoped it will be the first of many ventures outside Liverpool and will build even stronger links with the Wirral community over coming months in the lead-up to the main festival.

Joan Burnett, of Liverpool Pride, said: “This is a brilliant opportunity for Liverpool Pride to collaborate with venues across the region and offer people interested in LGBT film a chance to see great movies on their own doorstep. I am so proud to be launching the programme in New Brighton because it is my home town and The Light is an excellent cinema, where both the staff and facilities are amazing.”

Phil Dove, manager of The Light, said: “This is a great opportunity to show the versatility of the digital format.”

Out & About will be launched at 6.30pm. A reception in The Light bar will be followed by a screening of Laurence Anyways at 7.30pm.
