Police set to be given extra powers to tackle nuisance drinking on the streets of New Ferry

POLICE are to be given extra powers to tackle nuisance drinking on the streets of New Ferry.

Councillors have approved the first step in a process which could see parts of the area made subject to a Designated Public Places Order (DPPO).

The order, made under the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001, would not make it an offence to drink but police officers would be able to confiscate alcohol.

Drinkers who did not stop drinking or give up their alcohol when asked to do so could be fined up to £500.

Residents and business owners in New Ferry will now be consulted over the proposals, which won unanimous support from members of the Licensing, Health and Safety and General Purposes committee.

New Ferry Councillor Steve Niblock said: “Drinking on the streets has been an issue for a while and there have been complaints from local residents.”

Other areas in Wirral already subject to a Designated Public Places Order include Argyle Street and Hamilton Square in Birkenhead.
