A PENSIONER was found dead after a fire at his home in Wirral.
Fire crews were called to a bungalow in Lowfields Close, Eastham, just after 11am on Monday, after members of the public raised the alarm.
When they arrived, they entered the burning building and found the body of an elderly man inside.
Two appliances from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended the call-out and put out the fire.
Forensic examinations were being carried out at the scene and an investigation was under way to establish the cause.
The victim was still to be formally identified as the News went to press and next of kin informed.
Neighbours paid tribute to the man.
One said: “He was a nice old man, I think he was lonely.
“I never saw a bad side to him and he would always post a card through to my little son on birthdays and Christmas.
“We would always talk about the weather. It’s really sad that he’s died in such terrible circumstances.”
Another neighbour added: “People were gathered outside and when we looked out there was smoke coming out of the windows.”
A post-mortem was due to take place to establish the cause of death.
A police spokesman said: “We are treating the death as unexplained.”
