Caring Wirral hospital staff honoured at annual awards ceremony

CARING Wirral hospital staff were thanked for their hard work and commitment at an annual awards ceremony.

Almost 700 NHS staff working for Wirral University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust – which runs Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge hospitals – attended its annual Foundations Awards at the Floral Pavilion Theatre, hosted by Liverpool actor Neil Fitzmaurice.

The winners of the Treating You Well category – recognising the most outstanding team and individual – were nominated by the public.

Sister Liz Collins – who works on the children’s ward at Arrowe Park – scooped this year’s individual prize, with the team award going to the Paediatric Diabetes Team at Arrowe Park Hospital.

Nominations for other awards came from hospital staff, patients and carers.

Liz said: “I am totally shocked - it’s the first award I have won since starting my nursing career back in February 1979.”

The winner of the Proud Trust Employee of the Year’award was joiner Mike Hughes from Prenton who was described as “cheerful and helpful”.

Mr Hughes, who has worked in the NHS for 21 years and earlier this year underwent a hip replacement operation at Clatterbridge Hospital, received 71 nominations.

He said: “I didn’t expect this at all. The hospitals need to be in tip top condition so the patients receive care in the best environment possible.”

Chief Executive David Allison said: “What staff undertake each day is exceptional and shines through for all of us to see. “
