Wirral Arts: Twenty artists to exhibit in contemporary art and design fair

TWENTY artists will come together in a contemporary art and design fair in Wirral.

Textile artist Barbara Meynell has brought together a mix of talent from around the region for the one-day event.

The showcase of craftsmanship has been made by graduates and established artists, such as Wirral-based painter Will Coventry and award-winning photographer Marianthi Lainas.

Marianthi won this year’s Digital Photo magazine photographer of the year with one of her landscapes taken locally.

The art and design fair takes place this Saturday, October 13 at the Church of the Good Shepherd Hall, Heswall between 10am and 3pm. Admission is free.

It is being held as part of Heswall Arts Festival, with events going on until October 28.

Barbara, from Meols, specialises in batik and has exhibited her work nationally.

She has taken part in the Wirral Open Studio Tour and is a member of many art groups including Deeside Art Group.

Barbara said: “I am really pleased with the wide range of talent that will be showcased, all the artists’ work is truly amazing.

“Included in the line up is art graduate Cait Walker who will be displaying her glass range of bowls, coasters, paperweights, jewellery and wall panels.

“I will have on show my distinctive silk scarves which I design and paint individually by hand.

“I also create batik pictures, which are developed by drawing with hot wax and painting with dyes.

“I work on white paper or silk with subtle washes of dye and intricate lines drawn with the ‘tjanting’, a pen-like tool for the wax.

“My inspiration comes from the local coastline and the mountains of Snowdonia.

“I love the effects of changing light and colour on the landscape and aim to capture these moments using the dynamic medium of batik.”

Barbara will also have some of her 2D work on show at Heswall Library with Wirral group, ‘With these hands’ from October 13-19.
