A GROUP opposing plans by Tranmere Rovers to build on fields they say are a memorial to fallen soldiers from Wirral now claim to have Asda’s backing.
Rovers want to build up to 90 new homes on Ingleborough Field in Birkenhead, formerly the playing field of Birkenhead Institute and more recently used by the club for training.
A letter sent by a senior Asda executive says the supermarket will write to Wirral Council opposing the planning application.
Opponents of the scheme, which is linked to a plan to redevelop Woodchurch Leisure Centre, say Ingleborough should remain a memorial to 88 former Institute students who died in the First World War.
Asda is opposing Tranmere’s plans as part of its support for Fields In Trust, a wider charitable campaign to protect sports fields across the country.
An Asda spokesman said the firm wrote to the council to “express our support for the campaign”.
Wirral Council say it had yet to receive the letter.
