Wirral’s Fairtrade ambassador to be unveiled at ethical food fair

WIRRAL’S Fairtrade ambassador will be unveiled at an ethical fair this month.

As part of the Wirral Loves Fairtrade campaign, a huge market will be held in the borough with a wide range of stalls.

Major chains such as the Co-operative and Marks & Spencer will show off their Fairtrade products and there will be plenty of food to sample for free, along with Traidcraft items for sale.

The fair takes place at Heswall Hall on Saturday, March 24 from 10am to 3pm.

There will be live music and a Fairtrade cafe run by the Beacon Cafe, which is based next to Heswall Methodist Church and is run by volunteers. All profits are given to charitable causes.

Admission to the event, which has been organised by Heswall Churches Together, will be free.

The deputy mayor of Wirral, Cllr Gerry Ellis, will hand out awards to the winners of the Fairtrade champion competition.

The ambassador for Fairtrade on Wirral will also be announced.

The newly-appointed ambassador and the borough’s champions will be looking to promote Fairtrade for years to come.

The Wirral News will be telling readers their stories over the next few months, highlighting the ambassador’s trip to Ghana.

The visit will explore Fairtrade issues and see the impact of ethical purchasing on people in the developing world.

Cllr Mark Johnston, who sat on the panel to select Wirral’s champions and ambassador, said: “I was blown away by the quality of applications, especially what some of our schools are doing to educate the young about ethical purchasing and developing world issues.

“I look forward to seeing some of Wirral’s champions getting the credit they deserve.”
