Budget a “sad night in Wirral”

LABOUR opposition leader Steve Foulkes described the budget cabinet meeting as a “sad, sad night for Wirral”.

The Labour group has been fighting since December to use the council scrutiny committees to examine the cuts planned by the ruling coalition group, but claim they have been “gagged”.

Opposition leader Steve Foulkes said: “What we have seen tonight is window dressing, using reserves when perhaps we should keep that money and use it for providing key services.

“Most of the schemes that are attractive in their budget were created under my leadership, such as the apprentices and free insulation. They even took credit for area forums.

“We now know why we were not allowed to scrutinise the package of cuts, with 1,300 jobs going.”
