A WOMAN died after being hit by a number of vehicles on the M53.
The tragedy happened just before 10pm on Sunday.
Police said the 33-year-old was struck on the Liverpool-bound carriageway of the motorway at junction 3 near Woodchurch.
A stretch of the M53 was closed off as police launched an investigation into the collision.
Officers are trying to determine how the woman came to be on the carriageway.
All drivers stopped at the scene and were today assisting police with their inquiries.
The woman has not yet been formally identified by police.
A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: “At this stage it is not known how or why the woman came to be on the motorway.
“We have spoken to five drivers although it is not thought that she was hit by that many cars.”
Anyone who was travelling along the M53 motorway or has any information about the collision was being urged to contact Merseyside Police’s roads policing unit on 777 5771.
