Liverpool businessman Stephen Vaughan charged with assaulting police officer

LIVERPOOL businessman Stephen Vaughan and his former Liverpool FC reserve player son were charged with grievous bodily harm after a police officer’s cheekbone was broken.

The 28-year-old police officer was allegedly assaulted while investigating a disturbance at the Jug And Bottle hotel and restaurant, near Vaughan Snr’s Heswall home.

A third man was also charged over the incident.

Police said the officer suffered a fractured cheekbone during the alleged attack at about 10.10pm on Easter Sunday.

A Merseyside police spokesman said: “We can confirm three men were charged with causing grievous bodily harm in connection with an incident in Thurstaston Road, Heswall, last month.”

He said Vaughan Snr, 48, of Thurstaston Road, Heswall; Stephen Vaughan, 25, also of Thurstaston Road; and 29-year-old Paul Garner, of Millfield, Neston, were charged with section 18 assault following the attack.

Vaughan Snr took over as chairman and majority shareholder of Chester City FC in 2001 but, following relegation back to the Conference last year, the club was wound-up at the high court in March over an unpaid tax bill.

Former Liverpool FC reserve Vaughan Jnr made 80 appearances for Chester before he signed for Crosby-based Marine FC in March.

The three men will appear at Wirral magistrates’ court on May 26.
