Community group launches campaign to save former Great Eastern pub in New Ferry

It was renamed the Great Eastern in memory of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's famous passenger ship which was broken up on the adjacent shore in 1888/9.

The ship's bar and a stained glass window were salvaged from the ship and fitted into the pub, but they were removed in the late 1980s during a refurbishment.

In April 2008 an outline planning application to demolish the pub and build 30 apartments, submitted by Acrefare Estates, was refused.

The building was sold at auction last year and its new owners are believed to be a firm based in Southport.

The News contacted the owners returned calls at the time of going to press.
