Calday Grange Grammar students triumph in major business competition

PUPILS from Calday Grange Grammar triumphed in a business battle of the brain.

Students won the Liverpool heat of a national business competition held by the Institute of Chartered Accountants by assuming the role of accountants.

They were given just two hours to analyse, discuss and decide on the next steps for fictional organisations before presenting their ideas to a panel of businesses professionals.

Calday beat off competition from eight teams representing six colleges and sixth forms.

They will now go forward to the national final of the – Business Accounting and Skills Education (BASE) competition.

Teacher Simon Walker said: “We’re delighted to have won the Liverpool heat and look forward to the final.

“Working with mentors from local businesses enabled the pupils to really raise their standards as they began to think and act like professionals.

“They all thoroughly enjoyed the day and will take away a lot of confidence from the competition.”

Over twenty regional heats are taking place across the UK this month and Calday will join the winners at the national final in Birmingham on July 1.

Michael Sale, President of the Liverpool Society of Chartered Accountants, said: “Students were truly engaged, challenged and empowered during the course of the day.

“This competition required participants to work as a team to find solutions to real business issues.

“Not only did the students gain a valuable insight into what it means to be a chartered accountant, but they also took away transferable skills that will be required in their careers.”
