YOUTH unemployment has more than doubled over the past 12 months in Wallasey.
That’s why I was pleased to hear Ed Miliband announce that tackling youth unemployment will be a central ambition for the next Labour government with the Real Jobs Guarantee.
The jobs guarantee will mean that after 12 months of unemployment, all young people aged 18 to 24 will go on a six month long paid job – helping up to 110,000 people into work.
The government will pay full wages directly to the business to cover 25 hours of work per week at the minimum wage – £4,000 per job. In return, the employer would be expected to cover the training and development of the young person for a minimum of 10 hours a week.
This would be funded by the existing bank bonus tax’s youth jobs allocation – raising £600m to fund 150,000 jobs.
This could mean real help and support for over 100 long term unemployment young people in Wallasey who are being failed by this Tory-led government. It is simply unacceptable that one million young people are unemployed and we risk writing off an entire generation if the government does not provide real help and support now.
