Fundraiser to give five-year-old Mollie who has leukaemia a new bedroom

A FUNDRAISER is being held in Wirral to fit out a new bedroom for a five-year-old girl with leukaemia.

Little Mollie Avis was diagnosed with the disease on January 17 and is now receiving chemotheraphy.

The youngster from Moreton also suffers from cerebral palsy.

Although Mollie is expected to make a recovery, her mum Nicky wants to give her a new bedroom equipped with comforts to come home to after receiving the traumatic treatment.

Nicky, who also has a four-year-old son Rhys, told the News: “Mollie has cerebral palsy and was diagnosed with leukaemia on January 17.

“You never expect it to happen to your child.

“She kept getting bruises and not eating, a lack of appetite. I took her to Arrowe Park Hospital and she was diagnosed there. She is now getting treatment at Alder Hey.

“She has a rare type that she can recover from. But timing was crucial, I got her to hospital at the right moment. Medics said if she had come a week earlier it wouldn’t have been spotted and if it was a week later then it would have been too late.

“I think there should be more awareness given to parents to know what to look out for.

“She has been through enough. So far she has had three extensive chemotherapy treatments and all her hair has come out.

“She’ll be getting treatment for two or three years. She keeps asking ‘mummy when am I going to get better’.

“She was meant to have had her first holiday abroad to Menorca in June for her birthday, but now we can’t go because she can’t travel, so the bedroom is to put a smile on her face.

“I just want a lovely bedroom for her to play in when she gets home from chemo. Nicely decorated with new carpet and a television for her to play on the Wii.”

To help pay for the little girl’s dream bedroom, a gig is being held by four-piece band, Fire.

The fundraiser is on Friday, March 2 at the Armchair pub in Moreton.

Fire vocalist, Chris Walters who works at Arrowe Park Hospital, said: “We’ve only been together in Fire for eight months and in the short space of time doing really well. We wanted to do to give something back.

“Two of us knew Nicky and Mollie and wanted to help.”

Nicky added: “I cannot thank the band enough, they’re amazing and wonderful. The support from everyone is overwhelming.”

Tickets cost £4 available from the Armchair pub. There will be games and a raffle on the night.
