Boys from The Mosslands School, Wallasey get busy fundraising for African trip

STUDENTS from The Mosslands School in Wallasey have been busy fundraising for an expedition to Africa.

A group of 14 pupils from the boys school, aged 15 to 17, are travelling to Morocco next July to take part in a community project, helping to develop a deprived village.

They want to raise £20,000 and so far they have done a sponsored car wash and trekked up Mount Snowdon. They are running an ongoing collection of unwanted clothing and would be grateful for any contributions that can be dropped off at the school office on Mosslands Drive.

More events are planned later in the school year.

Teacher Jill Roberts, who, with Glyn Jones, will be leading the trip, said: “The boys are already extremely excited and are particularly looking forward to spending a week helping with community projects.

“These have been organised by Outlook Expeditions in Bangor and will include things like teaching English and helping to build and repair roads, wells and buildings.

“We will be flying to Marrakesh then travelling to the Atlas Mountains, as the students have planned to climb Mount Toubkal – the highest mountain in North Africa – as part of the trip.

“The car wash was a great start to the fundraising and the students have been getting fit and ready to climb up Mount Snowdon.

“They are aiming to raise £20,000 to ensure that everyone in the group can afford to go, so any donations or sponsorship from local businesses would be fantastic.

“Pupils are also taking part in the Ecokids scheme, which pays us a certain amount of money per tonne of clothing. As well as boosting funds for the Africa trip, we are hoping to raise awareness about textile recycling, inform people about the importance of recycling and help deprived families from around the world to purchase affordable clothing.

“The trip to Africa will be a great experience for the students and will really grow their team building and leadership skills. As a school we believe that these skills are invaluable.”
