Man’s body recovered from River Mersey near Birkenhead

THE body of a young man was recovered from the River Mersey.

The discovery was made two weeks after 21-year-old Robbie Crofts was last seen at New Brighton beach.

The body of his girlfriend Hayley Holmes was found near Fort Perch Rock the next morning.

Merseyside police yesterday said they were trying to find out the identity of the man and how he died.

They were alerted by the coastguard just after 10am yesterday following reports of a body in the water near to the Birkenhead coastline.

The body was recovered from the river and taken to Liverpool, where a post mortem was due to take place today.

Officers said the man was aged in his late teens or early 20s.

Dad-of-one Robbie, 21, went missing hours after attending the first day of the Mathew Street festival on Sunday, August 28.

Trainers believed to belong to him were found near Hayley’s body on New Brighton beach and police launched a search.
