Coastguards save dog as it is swept to sea in Wallasey

COASTGUARDS swung into action to save a pet dog in the River Mersey.

The black dog was swept out to sea off Wallasey’s Manor Road, close to Egremont, yesterday afternoon.

Liverpool Coastguard watch officer Lindsay Holt said the dog was rescued and reunited with its owner.

She said: "We received a number of 999 calls shortly after midday. Initially there were reports there was no one with the dog, but the owner was in the area. One of the man’s dogs managed to get back to the shore but the other one didn’t.

"We’re always very wary that owners will go in after their pets but everything turned out well.

"Wirral beach patrol, Hoylake Coastguard and a rescue boat from Merseyside Fire and Rescue were in attendance."
