ROADS were closed on New Brighton’s waterfront yesterday morning after police launched an investigation into an alleged sex assault.
A young woman contacted Merseyside Police in the early hours to report the attack, which is believed to have happened at 10pm on Monday.
The allegations were being investigated by the force’s Unity Team – specialist investigators focusing on serious sexual crimes.
A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said yesterday: “At this early stage of the investigation, officers are still gathering information.
“The woman will be spoken to by specially trained officers today.”
Officers cordoned off a suspected crime scene and forensic enquiries are on-going.
As a result, shortly after 4am, the A554 King’s Parade in Wallasey was closed in both directions between the Marine Promenade junction and The Clown Roundabout, near to the Marine Lake.
The area is an open space on the waterfront with very little nearby apart from the large Neptune development where a new supermarket, hotel and cinema are being constructed.
A Merseyside Police spokeswoman today appealed to anyone who was in the Promenade Road and Kings Parade area of New Brighton last night at around 10pm to contact them on 0151 777 1382 or the anonymous Crimestoppers hotline on 0800 555 111.
