BUSINESSES in a Wirral shopping centre are trying to have a building listed in a bid to stop a supermarket giant moving in.
Tesco has applied for permission to demolish the Plough Inn, at Moreton Cross, and build a new store on the site.
But neighbouring firms are fiercely opposed to the scheme, which is recommended for approval by planning officers.
Florist Stuart Beeston is leading the campaign against the supermarket operator, which has two other stores within a few miles of the site, including a Tesco Extra shop in Bidston.
Mr Beeston, who runs Carousel Flowers in Hoylake Road with his wife Tracey, said another supermarket would threaten the future of the shopping centre.
The Tesco application came shortly after Aldi announced plans to build a store near Stavordale Road.
A report to Wirral Council’s planning committee, meeting at Wallasey Town Hall on Wednesday July 6, said: “The proposal is not considered to significantly affect the character of the area or undermine the vitality or viability of Moreton town centre.”
But Mr Beeston has started a petition, now being completed in 18 shops around Moreton.
He said he hoped many business owners and residents will attend the planning meeting to oppose Tesco’s application.
He said: “Tesco says it will be good for the area and bring more people in, but people will not be walking around Moreton. Footfall around other businesses will drop.”
He said: “There are other things the Plough could be. It is a beautiful building which is part of Moreton’s architecture.”
Leasowe and Moreton East councillor Ian Lewis said: “One of the main objections seems to be the impact Tesco’s massive purchasing power will have on the shops nearby.
“Clearly, we welcome competition but the impact on many of the small traders nearby could be closure. The last thing we need in Moreton is empty shops.”
