A MORETON skip company was fined almost £3,000 in court for illegally placing skips on the highway.
Representatives from H and H Waste Transfer, based on Tarran Way South, failed to attend the hearing at Wirral Magistrates’ Court on January 28, but the case proceeded in their absence.
The firm was found guilty on seven counts of placing skips on the highway without the appropriate authority.
The law stipulates that skip hire companies apply for a permit for each individual skip, and detail its intended location, date of delivery and even the size.
H and H Waste Transfer was fined £150 on each count, as well as the prosecution costs, leaving the company with a bill, due in 21 days, totalling £2,821.56.
The prosecution was brought by Wirral Council. Director of technical services, David Green said: “The regulations exist to protect the safety of road users and pedestrians.
“Through these rules, we can reduce potential accidents by ensuring that skips are placed in appropriate locations are fully lit and marked and have the appropriate public liability insurance.
“We urge householders to ensure that their skip companies show them the correct paperwork for placement of their skip.
“We are working with many skip companies across Wirral but a few companies are persistently failing to comply.
“In these cases, prosecution is a last resort.”
