Ladies alive and kicking!
THE world was a very different place in 1970, but as Wallasey Ladybirds celebrate their 40th anniversary the group is as strong as its ever been.
Formed from the ashes of a mothers’ union that used to meet at St Mary’s Church, but didn’t fancy attending as many services as the vicar would have liked, the ladies of Wallasey Ladybirds have raised more than £80,000 for charity over four decades and boast a membership totalling around 120.
Chairman Kay Barton said: “I think he caught them playing fun and games and wanted a little more decorum!”
A move to the space above Wallasey Conservative Club saw the Ladybirds spread their wings and prove so popular their membership once numbered 180, with others on a waiting list.
They meet weekly, offer friendship, support and entertainment and raise at least £5,000 for local charities annually.
Kay, 69 and a member for 30 years, said: “It’s all gone so quickly, just like that old saying, ‘doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun’. We can’t believe it’s 40 years.
“This is quite special because a lot of these ladies reach a certain age, they’re not as quick and as frisky as they were and they might see 45 years, but they probably won’t see 50. These women deserve recognition for what they’ve done over the years.”
And the friendly club are on the lookout for new members.
Kay said: “We need lots of new members. Young women have got so much to do now but if they fancy a break or just a bit of space, I really can recommend it.”
The Ladybirds are not affiliated to any political or religious group, and meet only for fun and companionship.
Kay added: “The heart of our club is the members, it’s a pleasure to be their chairman.”
