Merseyside Fire Service is “99% certain” the fire was started deliberately.
Crew manager Leigh Povall, from Birkenhead fire station, said: “We were called out at around 8pm.
“When we got to the school we could see a fire within one classroom and that spread to another two classrooms.
“We knew there was a chance there could be asbestos in the building so we called in our HAZMAT unit. But the contractor has told us it’s all been removed.”
Spokesman Peter Owens added: “The site is awaiting demolition and we are 99% it was a deliberate act as there was no other means of a fire starting accidentally.”
Police said the firm which owned the site would not be making a complaint.
