Police seized £20,000 in counterfeit cash in New Brighton

POLICE discovered an estimated £20,000 in allegedly counterfeit £20 banknotes when an Audi was randomly stopped in New Brighton, Birkenhead magistrates’ heard on Friday.

Catrin Jones, 21, of Criccieth, and Sean O’Grady, 19, of Caernarfon, were both inside the vehicle when it was stopped in Rowson Street, on September 22.

Prosecuting, Alan Currums said: “A search recovered a quantity of bank notes in envelopes, said to be counterfeit.

“Each envelope contained £2,000 and police estimate between £16,000 and £20,000 of counterfeit notes were in the envelopes.”

Mr O’Grady did not indicate a plea, but Miss Jones pleaded not guilty to a charge of custody or control of a thing knowing it was a counterfeit currency note.

Both have been granted unconditional bail to appear again before the court on December 12.
