Former Parish Priest of SS Peter & Paul’s Church in New Brighton dies aged 76

A FORMER Parish Priest of New Brighton’s iconic SS Peter and Paul’s Church has died at the age of 76.

Father Michael John Wentworth, who was at SS Peter and Paul’s from 1996 to 2006, died in Arrowe Park Hospital on Sunday.

The former Diocesan school inspector was born in Liverpool in 1932 and was educated at St Anselm’s.

A spokesman for the Diocese of Shrewsbury said: “His first appointment in the Diocese was as Assistant Priest in Our Lady’s, Ellesmere Port followed by St Aidan’s, Northern Moor.

“In 1972 he was appointed Parish Priest of St Winefride’s, Sandbach, followed by St Raphael’s, Stalybridge, Holy Spirit, Halton Brook, St Luke’s Frodsham and SS Peter & Paul’s, New Brighton. In 2006 he retired to York Avenue in West Kirby. May he rest in peace.”

Father Wentworth’s funeral mass will take place on Monday (July 28) at St Agnes, West Kirby, starting at 11am, followed by interment at Grange Cemetery, West Kirby.
