The toddler is understood to have been playing with friends and enjoying a picnic on grass verges in the road, supervised by adults, before being hit by the car.

Earlier in the day she had visited Leasowe Early Years Centre - the school she was due to attend in September.

Bethany, who spent the morning before school playing with her four-year-old brother Jack, also has a 13-year-old sister, Rachael.

She would have been three on July 11.

Her mother Mary Wood, who is heavily pregnant, was too upset to talk.

But Bethany’s grandmother Joyce Wood said: "She was just our beautiful princess; a really wonderful baby.

"She was only just starting out in life. And she was so full of life. Everyone loved her.

“She always brought a smile to people’s faces."

The driver of the car stopped at the scene and is now helping police with their inquiries. Witnesses are being asked to contact police on 777 6544.
